We have three teams, the A, B and C team, with four riders and one reserve in each. The teams train at Eccleston Equestrian Centre, near Preston. The teams train every week and compete in their respective BUCS (British University and College Sport) leagues. Our teams are assigned to a group which consists of three other universities where each team in the group hosts a competition during the year. This year, the A team have competed against Liverpool University and UCLan . The B team have competed against Mysercough College, Liverpool University and Bradford University. The competitions include a simple dressage test and a show jumping round – but we compete on random horses and only get five minutes to warm up! The group winner is qualified for regional, and then national, finals. This year two of the A team riders qualified for Regionals with one proceeding onto Nationals!
The team trials are held shortly after Fresher’s week every October, where anyone can come and try out. You never know until you’ve tried! However, bear in mind that to be on the team, you have to be confident enough to get on a variety of horses, ride them for five minutes, then perform a dressage test or jump a round of 90cm jumps. So if you can’t do this, you might be better practising at the normal lessons at Beaumont Grange. The best riders are selected by the team captain and the instructor. Being on the team is an amazing experience, riding lots of different horses and competing – however it is a commitment with both time and money (each lesson costs £25) so please bear this in mind before coming to trials!
